Volunteers are our Mainstay
- Volunteers do intake, sort and bag food, and distribute food at both food pantry sites
- Volunteers organize and run all of our fund raising activities
- Volunteers pick up the food each week from the Greater Chicago Food Depository
- Volunteers purchase and delivery needed additional food from local stores
- Volunteers coordinate and run the special holiday distribution of food and toys
- Volunteers pick up, sort, and pack special donations and regular donations from churches and organizations
- Volunteers contribute money, food, and their time to keep the food pantries in operation
- Volunteers break-down boxes, carry out the trash, and clean the floors
- Volunteers serve on the Board of Directors, working to implement the strategic plan and insure that there is adequate funding for the organization

Some of our Current Volunteer Opportunities:
- Food Pantry Volunteers:
The number of families served by the food pantry has increased substantially. People are needed for a few hours or all day on Tuesdays at the CBS food pantry at Gethsemane Church. No experience necessary! For more information contact Coordinator Diane Hurstak/Eddy at (708) 863-4913.- Sort and bag food (9:00 am – 1:30 pm on Tuesdays)
- Unload the food from the truck (9:30 am – 11:00 am on Tuesdays)
- Bag and distribute food (2:00 pm – 5:30 pm on Tuesdays)
- Register returning and new recipients (2:00 pm – 5:30 pm on Tuesdays)
- Break-down boxes, carry out the trash (10:00 am – 6:00 pm on Tuesdays)
- Pick up, sort, and pack special and regular donations from churches and organizations (as needed)
- Grant Writer:
We are in need of someone willing to assist in grant writing. Experience is desired but not required. Training and other resources are available.
- GCFD Volunteers:
You or your group may volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) on behalf of the CBS food pantry. Our pantry receives a $5 food credit for every volunteer hour. In 2008, we received $608 in food credits through volunteer efforts. Please call CBS at 708-863-4913 to sign up as a "CBS volunteer" at the GCFD.
